Journey

Building information security standards through decades

Our path reflects commitment to protecting critical information across industries.
1934/48

Early records management foundations

The modern records management field began taking shape with the creation of the U.S. National Archives in 1934 and the work of pioneers such as Emmett J. Leahy, who helped establish early commercial records center models in the late 1940s.
1980

ACRC is founded

The Association of Commercial Records Centers (ACRC) was formed, helping organize and advance the growing records storage and management industry.
1981

NASDV is founded

The National Association of Secured Data Vaults (NASDV) was established, representing the expanding market for data protection and vault services.
1990

PRISM International is formed

ACRC and NASDV merged to create PRISM International, uniting records management, data protection, imaging, and related services under one global association.
1992

NAID is conceived

Industry leaders in secure destruction came together around the idea of forming a dedicated trade association focused on education, ethics, and awareness for secure information destruction.
1993/95

NAID is established

NAID’s structure, mission, and bylaws were formalized, and the association was incorporated as a nonprofit trade association for the secure destruction industry.
1999

NAID launches certification

NAID introduced its certification program, which evolved into the NAID AAA Certification Program—now one of the association’s most recognized initiatives.
2010/12

PRISM introduces its first certification program

During this period, PRISM released its first certification program for the records and information management industry, laying the groundwork for what became PRISM Privacy+.
2018

NAID and PRISM merge to form i-SIGMA

NAID and PRISM International officially came together in 2018 to form the International Secure Information Governance & Management Association (i-SIGMA), uniting secure destruction, records management, and information governance under one global trade association.
2020

PRISM Privacy+ is relaunched in its current format

i-SIGMA launched the reformatted PRISM Privacy+ Certification specifications and audit regime in March 2020, strengthening and modernizing the program.
Today

One association, broader impact

i-SIGMA carries forward the legacy of both NAID and PRISM International through certification, advocacy, education, and member leadership across the secure information management industry.

Government Relations

Explore certifications

Over the years, NAID and PRISM International have actively tackled government relations on an incidental basis in response to specific threats or opportunities and proactively worked as advocates on behalf of the RIM and secure data destruction industries. While these measures have had some great successes, the association and the industry have now reached a point where more consistent activity and vigilance are required. As such, the Board of Directors has formed a Government Relations Committee.

NAID and PRISM International have a successful history of working directly with the Federal Trade Commission, Securities and Exchange Commission, U.S. Financial Services Committee, Canadian House of Commons,

Canadian Privacy Commissioner, and the British Standards Institution. i-SIGMA continues to foster these relationships.

The committee is actively looking at initiatives such as including the spread of GDPR-type regulations to the US (such as providing input on the New Jersey Senate Bill 2834) and elsewhere, monitoring the status of S. 2179: Data Security and Breach Notification Act, and developing a responsive government relations monitoring program. The committee will also track, respond and provide updates to members on court rulings related to data protection and information governance, as well as regulatory developments affecting breach notification, background screening, access control and insurance.
